Gainesville welcomed President Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 23, 1938 to dedicate Roosevelt Square and Roosevelt Monument. The new courthouse was built after the old building was destroyed by the tornado of April 6, 1936. The speaker's stand is located in front of the new City Hall.
